Although my partner and I do our best to be careful about the media we watch around him, clearly we weren\u2019t being careful enough.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Eco-anxiety<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/ten-years-to-1-5-c-how-climate-anxiety-is-affecting-young-people-around-the-world-podcast-171566\">Eco-anxiety<\/a>\u00a0can be characterized by symptoms such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0959378021001709\">depression, anxiety, rumination, and insomnia<\/a>, and as many parents or caregivers can surely confirm,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/researchportal.bath.ac.uk\/en\/publications\/climate-anxiety-in-children-and-young-people-and-their-beliefs-ab\">children<\/a>\u00a0are increasingly experiencing these symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>As I searched for resources to combat this eco-anxiety, I began considering how religious or spiritual worldviews may help all of us manage the difficult feelings we experience when faced with almost constant news of the global climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, as a researcher whose interests lie at the intersection of<a href=\"https:\/\/ccrl-clrc.ca\/work\/civic-religious-literacy\/\">\u00a0religious literacy\u00a0<\/a>and education, and as a founding member of CCRL, I had some idea of<a href=\"https:\/\/ccrl-clrc.ca\/belief-and-climate-change\/\">\u00a0the diverse ways religious or spiritual leaders and communities are responding to climate change<\/a>. I know about interfaith initiatives such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/parliamentofreligions.org\/program-areas\/climate-action?page=1\">Parliament of World\u2019s Religions\u2019 commitment to climate action<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greenfaith.org\/greenfaith-international-network\/\">GreenFaith<\/a>, but in considering the specific question of how to address eco-anxiety in our children, I began to appreciate the profound ways in which religion and spirituality may be mobilized to address this growing problem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Coping with eco-anxiety<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/feel-alone-in-your-eco-anxiety-dont-its-remarkably-common-to-feel-dread-about-environmental-decline-170789\">Scholars have outlined four techniques<\/a>\u00a0to manage or cope with rising eco-anxiety:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Validation;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Time out;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Seek hope;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Take action.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>While I don\u2019t recommend these in the place of working with a mental health expert, I do believe religious or spiritual traditions may address all four of these techniques, because:<\/p>\n<p>First, up to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/news\/earthbeat\/can-faith-leaders-shift-public-opinion-toward-climate-action\">\u00a080% of the global population affiliates with a faith community<\/a>, which means\u00a0<b>there is great potential for religious leaders to address problems such as eco-anxiety.<\/b>\u00a0Indeed, it\u2019s heartening to see religious leaders such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/09\/10\/1035653392\/pope-francis-and-other-christian-leaders-are-calling-for-bold-climate-action#:~:text=Pope%20Francis%20And%20Other%20Christian%20Leaders%20Are%20Calling%20For%20Bold%20Climate%20Action&amp;text=photo%2FGetty%20Images-,Pope%20Francis%2C%20Archbishop%20of%20Canterbury%20Justin%20Portal%20Welby%20and%20Archbishop,are%20asking%20for%20climate%20action.\">Pope Francis\u2019 and other Christian leaders\u2019\u00a0<\/a>recent strong calls for climate action.<\/p>\n<p>Second,\u00a0<b>religious or spiritual communities frequently provide a welcoming space for individuals to find moments of peace and reflection<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 something that can help children as much as it helps adults.<\/p>\n<p>Third, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/publication\/faith-nature-our-sacred-commitment\">recent repor<\/a>t from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/about-un-environment\/faith-earth-initiative\">UN Environment Programme<\/a>\u00a0and the Faith for Earth Coalition provides ample evidence of the contributions global faith communities are making to address climate change. Knowledge that\u00a0<b>there are\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eM3SXHTJ7_k\"><b>many religious communities collaborating to address environmental issues\u00a0<\/b><\/a>can provide us all with reasons to feel hopeful, rather than anxious.<\/p>\n<p>Finally,\u00a0<b>religious or spiritual communities play a key role in offering youth opportunities to take action on climate change<\/b>, whether its through<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithcommongood.org\/nzdv9wQourA&amp;feature=youtu.be\">\u00a0interfaith initiatives such as Faith &amp; the Common Good<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interfaithrainforest.org\/\">the Interfaith Rainforest Initiative<\/a>, Indigenous led projects for youth engagement such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keepersofthewater.ca\/youth-engagement\">Keepers of the Water<\/a>, or specific religious community initiatives, such as the<a href=\"https:\/\/ecosikh.org\/selp\/\">\u00a0Sikh Environmental Leadership Program<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/isna.net\/isna-green-initiative\/\">\u00a0Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), Green initiative,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hazon.org\/commit-to-change\/jewishyouthclimatemovement\/\">Hazon\u2019s Jewish Youth Climate Movement,<\/a>\u00a0or the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhumiglobal.org\/environmental-changemakers\">Bhumi Global Young Environmental Changemakers\u00a0<\/a>movement, to name but a few.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>An approach towards solutions and hope<\/h2>\n<p>My son is not the only child \u2013 or person \u2013 to struggle with eco-anxiety. As we are faced with this emerging societal problem, the failure to look to religious communities for potential solutions is a significant omission. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ccrl-clrc.ca\/work\/civic-religious-literacy\/\">religious literacy framework<\/a>\u00a0clearly shows that religions, spiritual, and non-religious communities are influential players in society, and are impacted by all parts of society too. By including religious identities in conversations about societal problems such as combatting eco-anxiety,<a href=\"https:\/\/ccrl-clrc.ca\/work\/why-civic-religious-literacy\/\">\u00a0religious literacy<\/a>\u00a0provides a framework and a tool for creating solutions \u2013 and hope!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The other day, my 11 year-old son asked me to stop listening to the news because the stories about climate change make him feel anxious and scared.
