{"id":6272,"date":"2023-10-30T18:12:39","date_gmt":"2023-10-30T18:12:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ccrl-clrc.ca\/?post_type=project&#038;p=6272"},"modified":"2023-10-30T18:12:39","modified_gmt":"2023-10-30T18:12:39","slug":"how-do-we-engage-the-religious-spiritual-or-non-religious-other","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"https:\/\/ccrl-clrc.ca\/fr\/project\/how-do-we-engage-the-religious-spiritual-or-non-religious-other\/","title":{"rendered":"How do we engage the religious, spiritual, or non-religious other?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We live in a world of increasing diversity.<\/p>\n<p>Our Canadian work and community spaces reveal ethnic and cultural diversity.\u00a0 We increasingly respect and even celebrate that diversity in the public square.\u00a0 But what about the diversity of religious, spiritual, or non-religious worldviews?\u00a0 What do we know about that kind of diversity, and the beliefs and values associated with it?\u00a0 Canadians may well have common values but a lack of awareness of the worldview groundings of those values can lead to misunderstandings, tensions, and even the silencing of certain worldview voices.\u00a0 Is it possible to enhance worldview literacy to add even more richness to the diversity in this country?<\/p>\n<p>An<a href=\"https:\/\/erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu\/about-erasmus\/what-is-erasmus\">\u00a0Erasmus+<\/a>\u00a0funded project has unfolded in the European context that may provide some guidance and direction here.\u00a0 Entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hfjs.eu\/research\/sharing-worldviews_en.html\">Sharing Worldviews: Learning in Encounters for Common Values in Diversity<\/a>\u201d, it seeks to engage diverse worldview voices through learning encounters.\u00a0 Its goal is to equip citizens with the ability to engage in dialogue in mutual respect of different worldviews.\u00a0 It seeks to overcome tensions that often flare up in the public square because of this diversity.\u00a0 Specifically, it aims to engage students early in the learning process in the classroom, encourage international collaborations, create an<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharing-worldviews.com\/\">\u00a0online platform<\/a>\u00a0to promote<a href=\"https:\/\/ccrl-clrc.ca\/work\/civic-religious-literacy\/\">\u00a0religious literacy<\/a>, or worldview literacy as it is understood in many parts of Europe, and help students and teachers encounter the religious, spiritual, and non-religious\u00a0<i>other<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>So, why might this be important?<\/h2>\n<p>Ninian Smart, a pioneer in the development of religious studies, stated:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cAn educated person should know about and have a feel for many things, but perhaps the most important is to have an understanding of some of the chief worldviews which have shaped and are now shaping human culture and action\u201d (Worldviews, 1983).\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Smart recognized that much can be learned from the study of worldviews and how they shape thinking and behaviours.\u00a0 The German philologist Max M\u00fcller said that:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201che who knows one, knows none.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>M\u00fcller recognized that it is only in our encounters with others that we come to know ourselves \u2013 our worldviews \u2013 in greater depth.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Understanding culture beyond food and clothing<\/h2>\n<p>An episode of CBC\u2019s\u00a0<i>The Nature of Things\u00a0<\/i>entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/natureofthings\/episodes\/true-survivors\">True Survivors<\/a>\u201d, noted that each culture has a view of the world \u2013 a worldview \u2013 that goes far beyond food and clothing.\u00a0 That worldview asks: What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to be alive? What is our place in the world?\u00a0 These are existential concerns, and we are at the juncture where they become globally important.<\/p>\n<p>We often celebrate our diversity in Canada in festive displays of distinctive ethnic food and clothing.\u00a0 This is an excellent way to bring diverse people together as a beginning initiative.\u00a0 But it is important for us to also get beyond the superficial, for issues facing us today warrant deeper engagement.\u00a0 What can a greater understanding of worldview diversity contribute to the richness of Canada, or any other country?<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Moving beyond fear to engagement<\/h2>\n<p>Diversity is the essence of the world that we inhabit.\u00a0 We see it on vivid display in nature \u2013 and marvel at its beauty.\u00a0 Our appreciation of the diversity of nature is also enhanced when we better understand and experience it directly.\u00a0 And what of human diversity?\u00a0 When we become more aware of it, we also come to better understand and appreciate it, including the worldview diversity that accompanies it.\u00a0 But we all too often fear what we do not know.\u00a0 Therefore, enhancing knowledge and awareness of worldview diversity becomes an important step in overcoming that fear.<\/p>\n<p>A deeper understanding of the religious, spiritual, or non-religious other, and their deepest existential concerns \u2013 how to live well, what it means to be human, and more \u2013 becomes necessary as we face the challenges of today and tomorrow.\u00a0 Might a \u201cSharing Worldviews\u201d approach enhance public understanding, and in turn make us all the richer?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; We live in a world of increasing diversity.
